IEEM (Business Studies Institute of Montevideo) is Universidad de Montevideo’s Business School and was created in 1986 in order to study the specific problems which a contemporary business enterprise must face. The approach includes multiple disciplines and a methodology which is adapted to an object of investigation in a state of constant change.
IEEM thus caters to a need which is keenly felt in socio-economic circles, a need of management professionals who are competent because of their technical and scientific training, as well as because of their insight into human problems, and who are capable of promoting true social development.
IEEM’s mission is to offer a service to society in general and to the business world in particular, by means of high quality and challenging teaching, based on the investigation of the problems which affect the management profession.
IEEM, together with all the departments and faculties of the Universidad de Montevideo, has requested the Prelature of the Opus Dei to provide spiritual training and support to those who freely wish to make use of this service.
Case study method
IEEM’s pedagogical objective is to develop the practical abilities required for action; in view of this, the case study method is the basic academic tool used in the programs.
A case is the description of a real situation, similar to that faced by a manager in his or her daily business. It serves as a springboard for the discussion of relevant subjects related to company management.
Cases present situations at the moment when decisions must be taken, when the problem is not yet clearly defined and the information available is limited; such as occurs in real-life situations.
The preparation of each case involves three stages:
Individual preparation, in which the participant becomes familiar with the data, identifies the problem, analyzes the various alternatives and devises a plan of action in order to attempt a solution.
a) In the second stage, teams of five or six people share their different views of the case and compare and contrast their opinions. The diverse points of view and experiences of the team members, arising from their varying background and training, contribute to the enrichment of the analysis.
b) Finally, teams meet in a plenary session under the guidance of the instructor, who supervises the orderly discussion of the problems posed, the solutions proposed and the consequences of putting these solutions into practice.
The analysis of cases is complemented by assigned readings and lectures, in order to clarify models and integrate concepts. In addition, informal interaction with the lecturers makes it possible to extend the learning process beyond the general discussion sessions and approach subjects of particular interest to each participant.
